Who should not use electric toothbrush

1、Electric toothbrush is not suitable for children under 3 years old

Electric toothbrushes are not suitable for everyone. For example, the frequency and strength of the electric toothbrush are fixed, but the younger children can’t master the proper use method for a moment, which is easy to damage the immature gums, cause the gums to appear red and swollen, and at the same time, the teeth will be severely worn. Severe cases can also cause periodontitis, leading to tooth loss. Therefore, experts suggest that children under 3 years old should not use electric toothbrushes, while children between 3 and 6 years old must use electric toothbrushes under the guidance and supervision of their relatives.

2、Electric toothbrush should not be used in patients with severe periodontal disease and gingivitis

Also, if you have serious periodontal disease or gingival inflammation, it is not suitable to use a high-speed electric toothbrush, to avoid damaging the already fragile or injured gums and teeth by heavy pressure. Besides, because the brush head of the electric toothbrush is often difficult to touch the fine joints between teeth, it is still necessary to use an interdental brush or dental floss to clean the gaps between teeth, to make up for the defect that the electric toothbrush is difficult to clean the dead corner of teeth.

3、Precautions for using an electric toothbrush

1. When purchasing an electric toothbrush for the elderly, children, or the disabled, it is better to choose the integrated design of brush head and brush handle to avoid swallowing the brush head by mistake.

2. Use a small brush head as much as possible to get deep into the mouth and clean the back teeth.

3. Since the electric toothbrush has the function of forced rotation and vibration, its action force is far greater than that of the ordinary toothbrush. Therefore, when brushing your teeth, you should reduce the force by 60% compared with the ordinary toothbrush, to avoid damage to the teeth and gums due to excessive force.

4. At least 2 minutes of brushing time should be ensured, and the internal, external, and occlusal surfaces of each row of teeth can be effectively cleaned, especially the lower lingual surface, which is the most difficult to clean and easy to be missed, so we must consciously clean them.

5. Replace the brush head every 3 months. After using the brush head for a period of time, the bristles will become rough and easily irritate the gums. Even if there is no damage to the appearance, a certain number of bacteria have been hidden in the brush hair, which is not conducive to oral hygiene.
